Cheki, BrighterMonday boss dies after armed attack

The late Carey Eaton, co-founder of One Africa Media group

Carey Eaton, co-founder of One Africa Media group and founder of online car bazaar Cheki.co.ke has died. According to a press release sent to newsrooms by One Africa Media representatives Redline Public Relations, Eaton died following an armed robbery in Nairobi on Thursday morning.
here is the statement from their website:

It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the untimely death of Kenyan businessman Carey Eaton, who passed away in tragic circumstances after an armed robbery at a friend’s home in Nairobi in the early hours of this morning. Carey was the co-founder of the One Africa Media group of companies and one of the inspirational leaders of the technology revolution happening across the continent of Africa. He was on the boards of many companies and was well respected as a leader in the emerging online business sector where he also played a mentorship role to young technology entrepreneurs.
One Africa Media comprises Cheki, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya and StayNow in Kenya, as well as similar Internet businesses across Africa.
Previously CIO of the Australian classified group SEEK, Carey returned home to Kenya in 2011 to start Cheki. From humble beginnings he grew Cheki into Kenya’s number one car portal and the larger group of companies into Africa’s largest classified group. The Kenyan operation now includes over 150 people spread across the country.
Carey was intelligent and bold but wielded this gift with a humility that gave all around him the confidence to achieve more than they knew was possible. However, it is not Carey the business leader that we will miss as much as Carey the man: energetic, passionate and connected to us all in some special way.
What can never be taken away is the legacy around us in the team and the brands that he built. When we have mourned the loss of our friend we will, with renewed resolve, get back to building his vision into a great legacy. In celebration of his life.
Carey leaves behind his wife Steph, and children Noah, ILola, Ted and Archie.

Google reveals End-to-End, a Chrome add-on that will let you encrypt all your emails

Google announced on its official online security blog that the tech giant is working on a browser extension for Chrome that will encrypt your emails for you, regardless of what email service you use, as long as you do so while using Chrome.
Dubbed End-to-End, the browser add-on is currently in development. Though it’s not yet available for download in the Chrome Web Store, it will be eventually. In the interim, Google has made the  alpha version of the source code for End-to-End available to developers to toy around with.
“End-to-end encryption means data leaving your browser will be encrypted until the message’s intended recipient decrypts it, and that similarly encrypted messages sent to you will remain that way until you decrypt them in your browser,” Stephan Somogyi, Google’s Product Manager of Security and Privacy said. With End-to-End, “anyone will be able to use it to send and receive end-to-end encrypted emails through their existing web-based email provider.”
Google is also encouraging developers to test the code for bugs in End-to-End, and mentions that any kinks that are discovered in the code will result in compensation via the company’s Vulnerability Rewards Program.
This comes after Google published a Transparency Report which sheds light on email services and websites that offer encryption. Not long after the report was made public by Google, ISP (Internet Service Provider) and cable giant Comcast decided that it will reportedly change its tune in this area, and automatically encrypt its customers’ messages within the next few weeks.

Social Media Manager Job Description

"Hire someone who is passionate about your business. Don’t just hire anyone.”
Many business owners are becoming more interested in Social Media marketing. They’ve seen how it can drive leads and sales and boost their online reputation. However, many of them are not spending a lot of time on Social networks personally, so it’s quite a challenge to figure out who the best person is to handle their business’ online presence and what that person’s job duties would be.
Who speaks for your business?  Social Media is about people, conversations and deriving leads and sales from those relationships. In a previous post here I wrote about the questions to ask a potential hire. Once you’ve hired your Social Media manager, you’ll need a job description to track progress, hold them accountable and know exactly where your budget is going for Social Media marketing.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you determine where your Social Media manager is succeeding and where you need to place more attention:

Job Description

The Social Media Manager will implement the Company’s Social Media Strategy, develop brand awareness, generate inbound traffic and cultivate leads and sales.  The Social Media Manager is a highly motivated individual with experience and a passion for content strategy, blogging, micro-blogging and community participation leadership. This position is full time salaried with benefits, including attendance at Social Media, blogging and industry-specific conferences.

automotive-social-media-manager-job-descriptionResponsibilities

The following 6 elements are the roadmap to Social marketing success. Your Social Media Manager will master them to design and implement Social campaigns:
1. Clear Objectives. Set realistic goals. It isn’t enough to say you “see” results. Measurement is about more than just results. It must tie back to your objectives. You’ll never know your ROI without first setting objectives.
2. Great Design. Visual content has a lasting effect on us humans. Whether it’s your status updates, your landing pages or your Facebook ads, what the audience sees is what they’ll remember. Make sure it’s compelling and gets the point across.
3. Solid Content Strategy. How do you know what you’re going to post on your page? You must first sit down, get quiet, and do what I call a “Brand Discovery”. What is it about your business that makes it unique…makes people want to buy from you? Answer that question in detail. Then, describe your customers: what are their interests, what problems can you solve, how can you help them? Quality information that’s relevant to your audience is how you build a Facebook page or any other Social community.
4. Promotion Strategy. You need to continually grow your fan base. The best way is to utilize Facebook Ads. A small budget with carefully selected photos and ad copy (with a clear call-to-action) will drive likes to your page.
5. Engagement Strategy. You need a plan on how you’ll engage your fans and build those relationships. Your Social Media manager will listen, respond, ask questions and engage with your audience.
6. Conversion Strategy. Once you’re growing fans and engaging them, you need a strategy on how to convert them into customers. This more advanced form of Facebook marketing utilizes Facebook ads and marketing landing pages. Done right, it generates leads and sales. However, I’ve found most dealerships need advice and support. Find the right person to advise you and train your people so you get where you want to go faster, more efficiently and more cost-effectively.

Facebook launches friend-tracking feature

Facebook is introducing a mobile feature called Nearby Friends that taps into that steady stream of location information so friends can track each other in real time.
The idea is to make it easy for people to meet up in real life, so they can have conversations in person instead of comment threads, temporarily replacing Likes and LOLs with eye contact and actual laughter. A live meet-up is also an excellent opportunity to grab a selfie with your pal and upload it to the Facebook owned Instagram.
In a refreshing change, the new Nearby Friends feature is not turned on by default.
New Facebook tool finds your friends
Friends will not be able to see where you are unless you decide live-tracking is something you want in your life and visit Facebook's settings to turn it on. Making a potentially invasive new feature opt-in suggests Facebook has perhaps learned from some of its past mistakes and privacy problems.
You can choose to share your general location with all your Facebook friends, close friends or a customized list of people you feel most comfortable with. Further minimizing the potential stalking factor, your location is only shared with other people who are also using the feature and who have chosen to share their location with you.
When turned on, Nearby Friends shows a list of approved Facebook friends who also use the feature and shows their approximate location. A push notification can tell you how many of your friends are nearby. Open the app to see a list of pals, the neighborhood or city where they are, how many miles away that is from your current location, and a time stamp of when they where there.
There is an option to share your exact location with specific friends, which can be handy for coordinating large groups at concerts or finding someone in a crowded area. Your friends will see a little image of your face on a map for a set period of time.
Nearby Friends will be available on Facebook's iOS and Android apps, but will only work for select locations at first.
Facebook, Instagram and many other apps already include features that let people "check-in" to locations, but those location features are different because you decide if and when to share each specific location. You might check into a Starbucks downtown, but never into your home or other spot you'd rather keep private. Nearby Friends is continuously gathering details about where you are in the background instead of waiting for a manual check-in.
This is not the first time an app has used location information to physically connect friends. Similar apps such as Highlight, which got a flurry of attention in 2012, mapped out the locations of nearby strangers. Facebook also purchased a startup in 2012 called Glancee that also connected strangers. That technology evolved into this new, more private feature.
If you turn on the Nearby Friends feature, Facebook starts collecting data on your exact location and keeps details on where you've been in the past, not just places where you've used its app to check in. It also collects location information even when the Facebook app is closed.

But you can turn off this location history in the Facebook app's settings. It's possible to delete individual locations from a history, or clear the whole thing and start from scratch.

Facebook to use satellites, drones to spread the Internet

Facebook Inc is harnessing satellite, drone and other technology as part of an ambitious and costly effort to beam Internet connectivity to people in underdeveloped parts of the world.
The world's No. 1 social network said on Thursday it has hired aerospace and communications experts from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and its Ames Research Center for the new "Connectivity Lab" project.
"Today, we're sharing some details of the work Facebook's Connectivity Lab is doing to build drones, satellites and lasers to deliver the internet to everyone," Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook.
He gave few specifics and did not specify a time frame.
The move extends the social networking company's Internet.org effort, aimed at connecting billions of people who do not currently have Internet access in places such as Africa and Asia. Facebook has been working with telecommunications carriers to make Internet access more available and affordable.
"We're going to continue building these partnerships, but connecting the whole world will require inventing new technology too," Zuckerberg said in his post.
Facebook envisions a fleet of solar-powered drones as well as low-earth orbit and geosynchronous satellites delivering Internet access to different regions of the world. Invisible, infrared laser beams could allow Facebook to dramatically boost the speed of the Internet connections provided by the various aircraft, Facebook said on a Web page that explaining the project.
Facebook's plans to take to the skies underscore the company's rising ambitions to exert its influence beyond the confines of its 1.2 billion-member social network and to set the pace for new technology that will shape society. On Tuesday, Facebook announced plans to acquire Oculus VR Inc, a maker of virtual reality goggles that Facebook hopes could become the computing platform of the future.
Facebook is following in the steps of Google Inc, the world's largest Internet search engine, whose Google X division is working on a variety of so-called "moonshot" projects including self-driving cars and wearable computers.
Google announced plans last year to use solar-powered balloons to deliver Internet access to remote regions of the world.
Among the jobs openings posted on Facebook's website on Thursday were roles such as Antenna Systems Engineer and Electro-Optical Network Access Hardware Engineer.
Facebook also said it had hired a five-member team that worked at Ascenta, a British company whose founders created early versions of the Zephyr, which Facebook said held the record for the longest-flying solar-powered unmanned aircraft.

Shares of Facebook were up 28 cents, or less than 1 percent, at $61.25 in after-hours trading on Thursday.

What is the difference between Intel's Centrino and Core Duo?

It may seem difficult to comprehend but it really is quite simple. 'Centrino' is a marketing term for a type of laptop that promotes wireless network interoperability and long battery life, while 'Core' refers to the processor itself. To earn a Centrino badge, laptops must utilise a specific type of motherboard chipset, a specific type of wireless network card and a processor from the Intel Core range.
Three types of Core processor are commonly used in Centrino laptops: Core Solo, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. Core Solo CPUs represent the bottom rung -- they come in several guises but each variant is optimised for long battery life rather than raw speed. Laptops using Core Solo CPUs fall under the Centrino brand.
Centrino Duo-branded laptops use Core Duo processors. These are the dual-core alternatives to Core Solo. They typically have higher clock speeds, but more importantly, two cores (essentially twin brains) to share the workload.
Newer Centrino Duo laptops will utilise the Core 2 Duo series of processors. These chips have twice as much Level 2 cache memory for better performance, have optional high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi access, plus Intel 64 technology, which lets you take advantage of 64-bit operating systems.
You may also spot laptops branded Centrino Pro. These are reserved for business laptops that contain Intel vPro -- a technology that allows IT managers to control, manage and protect laptops whether they're on, off, broken or fully operational.
Core i7 is the best, then Core i5, then Core i3, then Core 2 Duo, then Centrino
