China holds two bloggers as it expands crackdown on rumors

Police in China have arrested an influential blogger and are holding a cartoonist in a widening crackdown on online "rumor-mongering", friends and a lawyer for one of them said on Thursday.

Hundreds of people have been detained since August, say Chinese media and rights groups, as the government has stepped up its campaign to banish rumors. Most have been released, but some are still being held on criminal charges.
The latest moves targeting the bloggers appear to suggest the new government, led by President Xi Jinping, is expanding its crackdown on dissent, although some critics have warned the move could backfire on Communist Party leaders.
"The use of these dictatorship tools to combat the criticism and grievances within civil society could be counterproductive," said Zhang Lifan, a historian, adding that it could fuel mistrust. "It may not be beneficial for maintaining the regime."
Dong Rubin, 51, who runs an Internet consulting company, has been arrested in southwestern Kunming on "suspicion of falsely declaring the capital in his company's registration", state news agency Xinhua said late on Wednesday.
Dong was also suspected of illegal business operations and the crime of "creating disturbances", Xinhua added.
Dong, who was previously invited by officials in southern Nanjing to speak about being an "online opinion leader", is well known for participating in a 2009 online probe into the sudden death of a man in a detention house in Yunnan province.
State broadcaster CCTV showed images of Dong admitting to "exaggeration and selectively publishing information" to benefit clients. In September, state media also aired a confession by Chinese-American venture capitalist, Charles Xue, one of China's best known online commentators.
Dong's lawyer, Yang Mingkua, told Reuters by telephone it was not convenient for him to be interviewed, but referred to a legal opinion published on his microblog.
"When the air is filled with voices that are unharmonious, that is not a sign of weakness, but a symbol of strength," Yang wrote on the microblog in September, describing Dong's case. "The freedom to speak and criticize is a citizen's right."
Yang said Dong believed he was "fundamentally innocent" in his actions on the Internet.
In Beijing, the capital, cartoonist Wang Liming was taken into custody at midnight on Wednesday and has not yet been freed, his friend, Wu Gan, told Reuters by telephone.

Wu said police told Wang's girlfriend they summoned him for forwarding a microblog post about a stranded mother holding a baby who had starved to death in the flood-hit eastern city of Yuyao.

"Suppression of this kind by the Chinese government is of no use," Wu said. "Rumors arise because there's no freedom to communicate on the Internet. Arresting people will not solve the problem because the problem does not lie with the people, but with the government."

The detentions come slightly over a month after China unveiled tough measures to stop the spread of what it calls irresponsible rumors, threatening jail terms of three years if untrue online posts are widely reposted.
China's top court and prosecutor have said people will be charged with defamation if online rumors they create are visited by 5,000 internet users or reposted more than 500 times.
Liu Hu, a Chinese investigative journalist accused of corruption was arrested on a defamation charge late in September, his lawyer said last week.
The Internet clampdown reveals the insecurity of the leaders of the ruling Communist Party, said Bo Zhiyue, a professor of Chinese politics at the National University of Singapore.

"They are trying to send China back all the way to the Stone Age," Bo said. "Where is the hope for political reform? Zero."

New bookless library

BiblioTech is a new library in Texas, but you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise. The library houses no physical books.
Staffers at San Antonio's BiblioTech say it's the first "bookless library." And in addition to its catalog of 10,000 e-books, this techy library also provides a digital lifeline to a low-income neighborhood that sorely needs it.

BiblioTech opened its doors Sept. 14 on the south side of San Antonio, a mostly Hispanic neighborhood where 40% of households don't have a computer and half lack broadband Internet service.
Although the library houses no printed books -- and members can even skip the visit by checking out its e-books online -- BiblioTech's staff says the library's physical presence is still key to its success.

"We're finding that you really have to get your head around a paradigm shift," said Laura Cole, BiblioTech's special projects coordinator. "Our digital library is stored in the cloud, so you don't have to come in to get a book. But we're a traditional library in that the building itself is an important community space."

HP and Google have rolled out an intriguing Chromebook

HP and Google have rolled out an intriguing Chromebook today -- the 11-inch HP Chromebook
Chromebooks, as you may recall, run Google's web-centric Chrome Operating System consisting mainly of a web browser and promising simplicity and security.

If you spend all your time in a web browser and don't want to spend much on a typical computer, a Chromebook would be worth a closer look. I've used several of them, I own one for quick tasks, my mom has one, Jared has one, Harry's mom has one. You get the idea. They make for good secondary machines or as main machines for basic web browsing.

There's been a tradeoff between price -- Chromebooks start at around $200 -- and specs, but HP's latest offering sets it apart from earlier Chromebooks in a few ways.
For starters, while many other cheap Chromebooks feature so-so screens, HP's model sports a nice-ish IPS (in-plane switching) screen for better viewing angles and more vivid color reproduction.
Second, the Chromebook can be charged with a micro-USB cable -- the same kind used for most non-Apple smartphones. If you've a got an Android phone, for instance, you could get away with packing a single charger before you leave the house. And finally, there will be a model available later this year with a built-in 4G/LTE cellular connection.

With the exception of the $1,300-and-up Chromebook Pixel, previous Chromebooks have only had a cellular option that used aging 3G networks.
Design-wise, the HP Chromebook 11 sports similar internal specs to an earlier $250 Samsung model; both feature a mobile processor more commonly found in smartphones and tablets than portable computers.
The idea is to offer better battery life, but there's an associated performance tradeoff. The machine has a 16-gigabyte solid state drive, two gigabytes of memory and HP claims battery life will last up to six hours. Weight is 2.3 pounds.

HP's Chromebook is available now in a Wi-Fi-only version for $279. The 4G/LTE model will be available later this year. That's the one I'm most interested in for use a mobile reporting computer. Hopefully the price is right and the cellular data plan options aren't too outrageous.

Twitter, Comcast sign TV partnership to let customers access TV shows from a tweet

Twitter, Comcast sign TV partnership to let customers access TV shows from a tweet
Twitter and Comcast have signed a partnership that will let viewers access TV shows and buy movie tickets directly from a tweet, deepening the short messaging service’s ties to television programming.

Twitter Inc. and Comcast Corp. said Wednesday that a new feature that’s part of the deal will let customers of Comcast’s Xfinify TV service tune in to programs by clicking a “see it” button in a tweet. In a statement, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts called it “an instant online remote control.”
The button will allow Twitter users who are also Comcast customers to set DVRs, tune in to shows online, on TV or on mobile devices. They can also buy movie tickets through Fandango. In the current TV season, shows on NBC, USA, Bravo, MSNBC and other networks will be accessible through the “see it” button. Comcast and Twitter said they are in talks with other TV networks and companies that will use the feature in the “coming months.”

Twitter’s deal with the nation’s largest cable company comes as the company prepares for an initial public offering of stock, which could occur as soon as next month. The agreement is more expansive than the advertising partnerships Twitter has signed recently with TV content providers such as CBS and the NFL. But it does have an advertising component, which adds NBCUniversal’s properties to Twitter’s Amplify program.

Amplify lets TV content owners beam real-time video clips to Twitter users who may have seen —or could be interested in — their programming. It also allows marketers to communicate with viewers who saw their TV ads, extending commercial pitches to consumers’ smartphones and tablets.

“Twitter is where television viewers come to talk about what they’re watching on TV when they’re watching it. Millions of users are exposed to the live conversation that unfolds on Twitter while a show is on the air and now, with See It, they’ll be able to tune in directly from a Tweet,” said Dick Costolo, Twitter’s CEO, in a statement.

Samsung Leaps Ahead of the Curve With New Galaxy Round

New Samsung Leaps

The fact that the Galaxy Round is curved doesn't mean that it's flexible or bendable -- at least not yet. "At present this is still a curved display on a rigid device," said Wayne Lam, senior analyst for mobile devices at IHS  iSuppli. "To truly be bendable or flexible would require all the components inside to be bendable or flexible, and we're not really there yet."
heels of LG's announcement earlier this week that it is planning flexible-display handsets of its own, Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced the release of the Galaxy Round, which it says is the world's first smartphone featuring a curved screen.
New features enabled by the device's curved design include the "Roll Effect," which enables the user to check information such as the date, time, missed calls and battery easily when the home screen is off, and the "Gravity Effect" for creating visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device, Samsung said.
Both Samsung and LG also offer curved OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, technology in large-panel TVs, but now the South Korean companies are aiming to put the curve in users' hands.
The 5.7-inch Galaxy Round is now being rolled out in South Korea in "Luxury Brown," with more colors coming soon. Samsung has not given any indication so far on whether the device would be released in other markets, however.
Samsung did not respond to our request for further details.
'We're Not Really There Yet'
The fact that the Galaxy Round is curved doesn't mean that it's flexible or bendable -- at least not yet.
"At present this is still a curved display on a rigid device," said Wayne Lam, senior analyst for mobile devices at IHS iSuppli. "If you look at Samsung and LG, these are both display manufacturers, and overall this is more a way to feed development of flexible display technology, but it could be at least a decade before these devices are truly flexible.
"To truly be bendable or flexible would require all the components inside to be bendable or flexible, and we're not really there yet," I am told TechNewsWorld.

South Africa gets first Wi-Fi-enabled stadium

Ellis Park Stadium

South Africa’s Golden Lions Rugby Union in partnership with internet provider WirelessG (G-Connect) announced today that in preparation for this weekend’s rugby test between the South African Springboks and New Zealand, Ellis Park Stadium has become the first public Wi-Fi enabled stadium hotspot in South Africa.

As part of its launch, G-Connect will sponsor free Wi-Fi connectivity to all main-stand spectators for this coming Saturday’s rugby Test.

The G-Connect Wi-Fi Hotspot at Ellis Park Stadium will be proclaimed as the first ‘Sport Stadium Wi-Fi Hotspot’ of its kind available to the public in South Africa. Carel van der Merwe, Wi-Fi entrepreneur and CEO of WirelessG comments, “This new G-Connect Wi-Fi innovation will not only provide connectivity relief in high congestion sport stadiums that have become unbearable for South African mobile and broadband users, but will change the way real time sport entertainment is offered in this country.”

“Spectators will soon be able to watch replays, listen to referee decisions and expert comments. All the excitement and energy inherent in a live entertainment environment such as this weekend’s Springbok Test will be disseminated via social media instantly from thousands of different angles.”

CEO of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, Manie Booysen, is thrilled at the opportunity to offer Wi-Fi to supporters and staff at the stadium in future. “I think it is an absolute privilege to be involved in this exciting launch ahead of the Test this weekend “We thank WirelessG for their efforts and for setting up this partnership with us. We sincerely hope the spectators, media and staff will enjoy this unique service.”

WirelessG and Ruckus Wireless have teamed up to combine their speciality offerings and deploy the G-Connect Wi-Fi hotspot at Ellis Park with the possibility of expanding this new initiative to various stadiums throughout South Africa. The Wi-Fi network design is a first for South Africa in terms of density, size and capacity. Its design facilitates a 10 Gigabits per second network capacity, which will be required for content rich onsite broadcasting to mobile devices in the nearby future.

What makes this deployment unique is the highly scientific in which various technologies throughout the network are combined to commercialize and facilitate the capacity requirements of this high density site. G-Connect hotspot in Ellis Park is also capable of facilitating “Wi-Fi Offloading” to mobile operators to relieve 3G and GSM in-stadium congestion during high density events. In this regard, WirelessG will engage with Mobile operators in the near future. Spectators wanting to use the service on Saturday will need to enable Wi-Fi on their devices, connect to the Wi-Fi network named “G-Connect” and open their internet browsers. A landing page interface will then be introduced from which the free G-Connect Wi-Fi service can be accessed.

“Taking into consideration that WirelessG launched G-Connect In-Flight Wi-Fi  less than 17 months ago, the deployment of the Wi-Fi hotspot at Ellis Park Stadium can be regarded as WirelessG`s  second first for South Africa. This clearly distinguishes WirelessG as the leading Wi-Fi specialist in South Africa,” says van der Merwe.

“We laud this innovation from our partner G-Connect. In celebration of Saturday’s record setting Wi-Fi connectivity at Ellis Park’s main pavilion, Mango and G-Connect have also discounted in-flight Wi-Fi usage to R5 on any Mango domestic flight during October. As recently as five years ago, it would have been impossible to predict the immense impact that social media and mobility would have in our world,” says Mango CEO Nico Bezuidenhout.
